Anemone lighting

Postby lewis2325 on Sat May 01, 2010 4:31 am

I am in the process of setting up my first salty aquarium which is 30 gal, and about the only type of fish I have decided on for sure is a clown. I would like to be able to keep an anemone in with my clown. I have looked at different lighting available for aquariums that it's all kinda confusing with so many different types that I have no idea what to begin looking for. Any help with pointing me in the right direction for lighting and a good starter anemone would be great. Thanks.

WELCOME to IA and also the Salty Side.

FYI, anemones require a very stable environment, therefore it is recommended to wait for the tank to stablize and for you to get down your tank maintence. Therefore, it is recommended to wait at least 6 months and up to a year before getting one. In the wild they have no reported life span.

For the tank, you should also have a refractometer due the inaccuracy of a hydrometer. For example, my hydrometer read 1.024 while my refractometer read 1.030! Also it would be best to use RO/Di water for the tank.

Clownfish do not need an anemone and they do not always go into one depending upon the type of anemone and the clownfish. My clownfish hosts in a mat of yellow polyps for example.

I understand that I have to have the tank stable before I add one, but I just wanted to collect my hardware and get all the stuff I need while I'm spending money :) . I also know that clowns don't need them, but anemones just look so cool. I was just wanting to know about lighting so I could go ahead and purchase it and to know good anemones to start looking at.

What lighting did you go with?

And, great that you are researching before you buy. I actually have made an impulse buy or two when I had setup this tank, but I have since learned my lesson.

Well, I contacted the company that I would be purchasing from and I also read the reviews on the unit from other customers. Here is a link to it. http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/p ... atid=12109
