Picasso triggerfish in a 75gallon?

Postby ranvan on Thu Feb 18, 2010 2:49 pm

I have a 75 gallon that is currently FW. However, I have had a 120g SW for over three years and finally feel comfortable with adding a second one. My first SW is FOWLR but I will be adding corals to it.

As I look at my 75g, I am seeing the idea of a Picasso Triggerfish and maybe two more fish.

Questions....

Do I need a protein skimmer or can I use the AC110s (2) on it now? I will get oneif necessary.
Would live rock be necessary? I like the looks of it and will probably get it, but would I need alot? Instead of 75#, could I get by with half of that?
What fish could I put with the PT? I have a silver scat in my 120g who I am afraid will eat some corals, so he may be moved. Would he work?

Oh, is the PT the most pet like SW fish out there? I have a 120g with a couple of Oscars (plus Jack Dempseys, Jewelfish, Firemouth) and am looking for the equivalent in SW.

Advice? Ideas?

For me, the idea saltwater fish is a yellow tang and a clown fish. Those two symbolize salt water to me more than any others. And, BTW, I have those two. :)

Do I need a protein skimmer
IMHO, it is not required but I recommend it. Also, most manufactures recommendations on these are way to high. You almost have to half the size of the tank that the skimmer is supposed to do.

AC110s
Are those canister filters? I generally do not recommend canister filters as a primary filter for salt water tanks. They require too much maintence for them to work properly.

Would live rock be necessary?
IMHO, yes it is. It will act as a filter and provides a natural environment for the fish and critters you have in the tank. Is this a fish only tank? If so, then a 1 lb per gallon should be okay.
I wish my fish and critters would read the same posts I do

I agree with Raphie, go with a protein skimmer and live rock.

If it was my 75 - rather than a Picasso and some other fish, I would go with a single undulated trigger. Picassos can get large and it's hit or miss on how aggressive they are. My guess is that the other fish you get will have to be fairly large or fiesty (damsels?) to hold their ground - mighty be tricky to sort out when you consider they will all be in a 75. Undulated triggers are (relatively) smaller, very neat looking and there's no guestion about temper.
